Oh, hello. I’m Sooz.

In spring 2023, a friend suggested I read The Diabetes Code by Dr. Jason Fung. That book turned a light on and changed the course of my life.

I’d been living with Type-2 Diabetes since early 2007, taking Metformin for nearly 16 years. By early 2023, I was also on two types of insulin. I believed what I’d been told: that this was a progressive disease, and managing decline was the best I could do.

That’s not what happened.

What Changed

After reading The Diabetes Code, I began experimenting with time-restricted eating and small behavior changes. I started reading a lot of other books and listened to many podcasts. By Winter 2023, I had stopped taking insulin (with endocrinologist approval'). In Winter 2024, my endocrinologist said I would probably need to be on Mounjaro, a GLP-1 medication, for the rest of my life to manage Type-2 Diabetes and maintain significant weight loss. But when my A1C dropped to 5.1% by Summer 2024, she agreed I could stop that, too. It’s now 5% as of Spring 2025. I’ve lost considerably more weight and body fat since then, too.

What happened in between wasn’t magic. It was self-care, metabolic repair, nervous system work, and a whole lot of honest trial and error. I started eating differently, not just what I ate but when. I gave up alcohol. I learned about hydration: really learned, beyond just “drink more water.” I moved my body more. I got curious about the stories I believed. And I started treating self-care not as a reward for healing, but as the starting point.

Along the way, I’ve worked through more than just Type-2 Diabetes. Like many people in their 40s and 50s, I faced a stack of related diagnoses, including sleep apnea, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and more signs of metabolic dysfunction. Some are still in progress. But I’ve stopped outsourcing the story of my body.

In Spring 2024, I joined the online community at The Fasting Method, co-founded by Dr. Jason Fung and Megan Ramos. Through TFM's live meetings and online forum, I learned even more about how to apply fasting and metabolic principles in a real-life, real-body way. In Winter 2025, they invited me to share part of my “member transformation” story on their podcast.

What I’m Writing About

I’m calling this a health and wellness expedition because that’s what it feels like. It’s ongoing. There is no perfect map.

This Substack is where I recap what I’ve worked on since 2023 and document what’s still unfolding. It’s through the lens of functional health medicine. My focus includes:

  • Type-2 Diabetes recovery

  • Metabolic health and weight loss

  • Mental health and nervous system regulation

  • Heart health, hydration, fitness, and eye health

This is a personal story. I’m not a health professional. Nothing here is medical advice. But I believe stories like mine matter, especially when we’re in the middle of the work, not just reflecting from the end.

Why “It’s All Happening”

The title is a reference to my favorite movie (Almost Famous), but it also sums up the experience of rebuilding your life. Emotionally. Physically. Metabolically. It’s messy. It’s hopeful. It’s all happening.

Join the Dialogue?

I’d love for this to be a conversation, not a monologue.

Maybe you're navigating a similar health challenge. Maybe you're years ahead of me. Or maybe you're just now realizing that caring for yourself doesn't mean you're self-centered. It means you're ready. Either way, I’m glad you're here.

Let’s share what we’re learning. Let’s normalize slow healing, nervous system repair, weird wins, and unconventional paths forward.

If you’re curious, you can listen to my interview on The Fasting Method podcast (Episode #188). I recorded it in January 2025, and a few things have evolved since then. The story is still unfolding.
